April 2020 Content Consumption
Another month, another post about all of the content I've consumed in the past few weeks! This month I've been in more of a Netflix/Hulu mood than reading mood, but this month has honestly been a winner in all categories!
BOOKS
The Testaments by Margaret Atwood: 10/10 // I read The Handmaid's Tale a few years ago before the TV show came out on Hulu. I loved that book and was so excited when I heard there was a sequel! It finally became available as an e-book through my library and I devoured it. It's told from 3 different women's perspectives 15 years after Offred's story ends. It's incredibly interesting and genuinely could not put it down. Highly recommend if you're a fan of the first book or the show on Hulu!
Before We Were Strangers by Renee Carlino: 8/10 // This was the first April read for The Readheads Book Club. It's about 2 people who were in love in college, grew apart afterwards, and then found each other later on in life. It was the perfect easy, romantic read! The only reason I didn't rate it higher is that I wish the ending wrapped some storylines up a bit more, and there were some issues that I felt could have been resolved so much easier than in the book. But it's the perfect easy read for these quarantine times.
TV
"Nailed It!" Season 4 (Netflix): 9/10 // My family loves this show. We always end up watching the whole season right when it comes out and then are so sad when we're done! If you haven't heard of this before, it's a group of amateur bakers trying to make professional level creative desserts that always turn into a fail! We always end up cry-laughing through every episode, and season 4 came out at the beginning of the month! There is also Holiday Nailed It! with Christmas, Hannakuh, and New Years episodes that are great as well!
"Tiger King" (Netflix): 9/10 // Shocker, I know, but this was pretty much a must-see after all of the memes and news articles started popping up about this. We watched all 8 episodes in 1 day. We love true crime, and just when we though things couldn't get any weirder or crazier, they did. This show is so interesting and unlike anything I have ever seen before and if you haven't seen it yet, what are you doing?
"Too Hot To Handle" (Netlfix): 8/10 // ...I'm sensing a theme of us watching shows in one day. But this was so easy to watch, juicy, and sucked us in right from the beginning! Netflix has really been putting out amazing reality content, and this is no exception. It's basically a bunch of hot singles all on an island retreat together where they can't have sex, kiss, masturbate, or anything. If they do, money gets deducted from the overall grand prize of $100,000. So good if you love reality TV (which I definitely do!).
"Outer Banks" (Netlfix): 10/10 // Another mainstream show that everyone is watching on Netflix. But, for very good reason! This is a show about teens living on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. When a hurricane brings in an ancient shipwreck rumored to hold $400 million in gold, the four rush to find it while also looking for one of their missing fathers, avoiding other people looking for the treasure with more power than them, and dealing with the separation of the rich and the poor on the island. It truly is an incredible series and I'm itching for a season 2 already!
MOVIES
Frozen II (Disney+): 8/10 // I was so happy this was put on Disney+ early because of the quarantine! My mom and I watched it together, and we really enjoyed it! Our only issue with it is how complicated the plot is. My mom and I had a difficult time understanding some of the plot, and we wondered how children were supposed to follow what was happening. But the characters were as great as ever, the songs were fantastic, and it was overall a very well done sequel!
The Good Dinosaur (Disney+): 6/10 // This one was just...okay. It was very cute, and a good coming of age and family story, but one I probably won't watch again.
Penguins (Disney+): 9/10 // I love penguins. They're my favorite animal, and if there's anything to do with a penguin, I'm automatically obsessed with it. This is a documentary narrated by Ed Helms that follows an Adelie penguin named "Steve" as he navigates his first mating season, being a father for the first time, and outrunning predators and weather along the way. This was so cute and an interesting look at the lives of penguins in the Antarctic. Definitely recommend if you're into nature documentaries or just love some cute penguins!
Onward (Disney+): 8/10 // I had been looking forward to this movie for a few weeks now! The premise was so cute, there's a ton of celebrities in it, and I'm slightly (aka, more than slightly) obsessed with Chris Pratt. My family and I watched this while we ate dinner the other day, and I think I liked it the most out of everyone. The story line is definitely pretty strange, but honestly the ending is what made the entire move for me. It follows two brothers who find a spell to bring their dead father back to life for 24 hours. The spell only half works, so they go on a quest to finish the spell so they can meet with their father before the 24 hours is up. It's so heart-warming and sweet, and I really enjoyed it!
