January 2020 Content Consumption
A lot of the podcasts I listen to, YouTubers I watch, and blogs I read talk about what they have watched, listened to, read, etc. I always love getting new recommendations for things to consume, so I thought that I would start tracking mine monthly. So here are the movies, books, and TV shows from the past month and what I though of them!
BOOKS
Winter in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand: 7.5/10 This was my first read of 2020. I love a good chick lit read every once in awhile, and her books are juicy and easy to read. This book is about a woman whose husband dies while on a "work trip", and she finds out that he has a whole other family that she didn't know about in the Bahamas. I enjoyed this book and it was a quick and easy read, but it wasn't my favorite of hers that I've read. But you bet I'll be reading the sequel in the near future!
Park Avenue Summer by Renee Rosen: 9/10 This is a book that has been on my "Want to Read" list for so long! I first heard of it from Katy Bellotte on YouTube, and finally got my hands on it from the library. This is about a girl who just moved to New York to work as Helen Gurley Brown's assistant for the new Cosmo. It's a great story of female empowerment and overcoming obstacles, and it was just such a great overall read!
TV
YOU Season 2 (Netflix): 8/10 I loved the first season of YOU so much, and was excited when the second season finally came out. This season has Joe in LA, outrunning his first ex, Candace, and meeting another girl to obsess over, Love. I really enjoyed Season 2, but not as much as Season 1. And from the way Season 2 ended, there will definitely be a Season 3 on the way!
CHEER (Netflix): 10/10 This series definitely lives up to the hype! This documentary follows a junior college cheer team on their road to Daytona Beach for Nationals. I binged the whole thing and was (and still am) so invested in my favorite members. I really hope there's another season because I'm ready to watch them do it all over again!
The Circle (Netflix): 10/10 When I first saw the trailer for this on Netflix, I thought this looked so dumb. But then I started seeing rave reviews on Twitter and thought I would give it a shot. What started out as watching one episode before bed turned into three, and then finishing the series the next day. It is so incredible, and actually preaches not to judge someone based off of their social media profiles. Absolutely loved this and am hoping for another season very soon! There's also a UK version that I might watch too because I'm that invested!
Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez (Netflix): 8/10 I had heard rave reviews about this series, and I love a good true crime documentary, so I went for it. It's only three episodes and so interesting. I honestly knew nothing about Aaron Hernandez and his crimes, but wow this was so crazy. From learning about his childhood and football career, to the people he killed, it was a wild ride. It really showed how privilege plays a part in people's lives, and even the aftermath of their life. Definitely recommend, even if you're not a football fan!
Unbelievable (Netflix): 9/10 I read the amazing Pulitzer prize article that this series was based on and was in shock. When I found out it had been released as a TV adaptation on Netflix, it was immediately added to my Watchlist. A girl in Washington named Marie is raped and attacked in her apartment. When a few inconsistencies in her story are found, she is forced to retract her statement and live with the repercussions. Meanwhile in Colorado, more girls are being attacked in a very similar way to Marie. It's an incredibly heart-breaking series but is so well done. Definitely recommend, but there are a lot of triggers, so be prepared.
Grace and Frankie Season 6 (Netflix): 9/10 My family loves Grace and Frankie! I got my parents into it and now all three of us are addicted! Season 6 is one of the best seasons yet, and we're already sad that we have to wait another year for Season 7! If you don't watch Grace and Frankie already, what are you doing???? Get on it!!!
Living With Yourself (Netflix): 5/10 I love Paul Rudd and had heard good things about this show, but it just didn't do it for me. It's only eight episodes so I did finish this, but definitely not my favorite. A man named Miles ends up getting accidentally cloned and has to learn to navigate life with a second him running around. It started out kinda funny and then just got weird.
MOVIES
Booksmart (Hulu): 7/10 This definitely isn't a new movie, but when we saw it was on Hulu we decided to watch it one night. It's about two unpopular high schoolers who decide to go to their first high school party the night before their graduation. It's pretty funny and definitely enjoyable, but I probably won't be watching it again.
Have you seen or read anything good lately?
