August 2020 Content Consumption

How has another month passed already?  Also disclaimer for this post: I read a lot this month.  Like no new shows to add to this list and only one movie!  Pretty much all I did this month was read because I was just so in the mood to read and I'm going to utilize this feeling.  So this is basically a "What I Read in August + One Movie I Also Watched".  Let me know what you read or watched this month and happy September!

Pic is from a socially distant dinner with a friend.  Pizza outside was much needed!

BOOKS

The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks: 9/10 // So this book is the sequel to The Royal We which is basically fan fiction about Prince William and Kate.  I read the first book freshman year of college and the sequel came out this year and let me tell you, I was so excited!  It was a little hard to get into at first since I didn't really remember how the first one ended since it's been five years since I read it, but my memory started to catch up and I loved it so much.  There's so much drama and was just the perfect juicy royals read for anyone who loves these types of books.  Also, justice for Freddie.  IYKYK...

Bright Side by Kim Holden: 6/10 // This was the August book for the Readheads Book Club.  I wasn't a huge fan to be honest.  The writing was so cringe, the characters were so unrealistic to me and I basically read this as fast as I could so that I could be done with it!  There is a twist at the end and it does get pretty sad, but I was not a huge fan.  Do your research on the book because this is some people's favorite book of all time, and other people hated it, so read at your own risk!

28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand: 10/10 // I love literally anything Elin Hilderbrand writes.  This is her newest book and when I saw it was available from my library via the Libby app, I jumped on it.  This book is about two people, Mallory and Jake, who have a same time next year arrangement for 28 years.  This book truly wrecked me and I still miss it.  Run, don't walk, to read this book!

Normal People by Sally Rooney: 8/10 // I'm very late to the party on this one but I finally read this!  This is about two people, Connell and Marianne, and their story and how they keep coming in and out of each others' lives.  I loved how realistic this book is, and how much of an impact first love has on someone.  And how even when you think things are perfect, they can be upended again.  I was left wanting more, and also a little disappointed that there wasn't a big climax, but overall a great read and looking forward to watching the show on Hulu.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides: 8/10 // I had been reading a lot of fun fiction, so I was ready for a thriller!  This one was on my list for quite awhile and I finally got a copy on Libby.  This was so different than I thought it was going to be and truly did not expect the ending!  Liked this a lot and a change was definitely needed and this was exactly what I was looking for.  This is about a woman who murdered her husband and then never spoke another word.  A psychotherapist thinks he can crack the code and works to get to know her and get her talking again.

Regretting You by Colleen Hoover: 6.5/10 // This came highly recommended and I love Verity so thought I would read some more Colleen Hoover.  This is about a mother and daughter, Morgan and Clara, and how they each deal with the death of the head of their little family, Chris.  Despite my rating, I really enjoyed this book.  I loved the storyline and the realistic depiction of grief and miscommunication.  The reason I rated this lower is because Clara annoyed me so much!

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover: 8/10 // Another Colleen Hoover book!  I liked this one a lot better than Regretting You and it ended up playing out a lot different than how I thought it was.  Lily is living her life in Boston when she meets a handsome neurosurgeon, Lyle, and becomes the exception to his no dating rule.  But as she becomes more comfortable with him someone from her past becomes involved in her life again who she has a history with.  I loved this one and liked the surprises and twists and turns that I wasn't expecting since the description gives literally nothing away.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb: 9/10 // First nonfiction book in awhile!  I'm normally not a big nonfiction fan.  It takes a lot longer for me to get through than fiction and I normally just don't enjoy it as much for some reason.  But I was wanting a change and this book fit that need perfectly.  Lori is a therapist and after a dramatic change in her life, she decides to see her own therapist.  This book tells her story with mental health, some of her clients' journeys with metal health, and just advocating for therapy in general.  I loved this book so much and as someone who used to go to therapy this felt like a breath of fresh air.  I felt like I was in my own therapy session even if I couldn't relate with every single patient, I got something out of every patient's story.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle: 8/10 // This book has been so popular and I finally got my hands on it!  This is Glennon's story about meeting her wife and shedding society's expectations about who she should be and how she should act.  It feels even more relatable based one everything going on in our world right now since she talks about the Black Lives Matter movement, being gay, and so much more.  I already loved the essays and stories she was telling, but add in that it is extremely relevant right now and I got so much more out of it.

The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine: 9/10 // So many people are obsessed with this book and now I definitely get the hype!  Amber is tired of being invisible and thinks she deserves more, so she takes matters into her own hands.  She befriends rich Daphne Parrish in order to get closer to her husband.  There are so many twists and turns to this and once you hit 50%, things get wild!  One of the best books I've read this year.  I read it in two sittings because I truly could not stop!

MOVIES

The Lovebirds (Netflix): 8.5/10 // I watched this movie with my parents after dinner one night and we all loved this!  A couple on the brink of breaking up accidentally witnesses a murder and are then the only people at the crime scene.  The rest of the movie is them trying to clear their names and helping their relationship in the meantime.  Very cute, fun movie that is fun to watch with others or even on your own for  fun movie night!

Let me know what you've consumed this past month!

xoxo, Hannah
