My First Spin Class Experience

After months (not even joking, it’s been months) of wanting to try a spin class, I bit the bullet and booked a class for yesterday! I’ve seen so much hype from so many people both in real life and on social media and YouTube. I was worried it would be too hard, it would be too awkward, and that I just wouldn’t know how to do it. My fun fact I tell people is that I never even learned how to ride a bike! Obviously the spin bikes don’t go anywhere, but I was worried that it would feel too foreign or weird to me and that I would make a fool of myself in class. I had also read a lot of reviews that you won’t get the hang of it for four or five classes, and that really intimidated me. I didn’t want to go to a work out class where I would be bad no matter what.

I finally decided to try spin because the studio closest to me, MO Cycle Studio, has classes for $12, which is one of the cheapest I have ever seen. It’s also close to home, so it wouldn’t be a long drive, and the class schedule aligned with when I would get off of work. I also had not been eating to great for awhile, and I know myself and just work better in a class setting. I push myself more and and will work out for longer than if I was working out on my own at home. So, now that I have experienced my first spin class, I decided to write a post about it since there was so much I was nervous about, and address it all for anyone else who wants to try spin and is as nervous as I was.

I get off of work at 5pm, so I scheduled a 6pm class so that I had time to drive to the studio, change, and meet with the instructor since it would be my first class. I was pretty nervous to change there since I’ve never been before, so I ended up changing in my car...I know, but I change there now so don’t judge me.

My instructor was so nice. She called me “love”, explained where the bathrooms were, and how the lockers worked. When I was settled and ready, she led me into the room where I could choose a bike and she would help set up my bike. She also explained each of the hand positions and encouraged my form for getting out of the saddle and push ups. Although I was still nervous, I felt a little better knowing what some of the terminology means.

When the class started, I definitely overestimated myself. As someone who has been dancing since I was five-years-old, I thought it would be so easy to stay on beat and keep up with the instructor. But let me tell you, it was not. Within 15 minutes I thought I was going to die and was literally counting down to when the class would end.

When I began feeling like this, I told myself to take it easy. So when I started to feel tired, I sat on the bike and pedaled, and did push ups that way. Or I would stand and do every other push up instead of trying to hit every single move. Once I started to do that and take it at my own pace, I felt better and ended up enjoying the class more.

I came home and was so sore! But I forced myself to sign up for another class in two days, now that I knew what the class was like. I decided that if I still didn’t like it very much after that class, then I gave it a good try, and would do something else. But, I ended up loving the second class so much more.

I was out of the saddle when I was supposed to be, I sat when I was supposed to, and I understood the choreography more when the instructor prefaced the next song. I still had to take things at my own pace, and wouldn’t do as much resistance, but I actually ended up enjoying it and having fun, which is honestly the most important part.

I signed up for two more classes next week, one of which is at 5:30am to challenge myself and see if I like mornings as well. I haven’t been in a few days and I honestly miss it and can’t wait to go again next week.

Bottom line is, if you want to try spin, then go for it. Someone at my first class said it best, and I completely agree with her: your first class is the most uncomfortable and the most awkward. I could barely sit down because my butt hurt so bad the day after my first class, and I thought I was going to keel over halfway through my first one. But in my second class, I had fun, I was singing along to the lyrics and cheering with everyone else, and I can’t wait to go back. If it’s not for you, then it’s not for you. Everyone is different and everyone enjoys different types of workouts. But if you are looking for a sign to try your first spin class, then this is it.

Xoxo, Hannah
