Rhode Island Post Cards

I just got back on Monday from a 10 day trip to one of my favorite places: Rhode Island!  My grandma was born and raised there, and moved to St. Louis after she married my grandpa, so her entire family lives up there.  My uncle (my grandma's brother) lives in my great-grandmother's beach house during the summer, so every summer, my family packs up, and we head up to the beach house for the summer!  I've been going since I was literally two months old, and a Rhode Island travel guide will be coming up on the blog soon!

In today's post, I'm going to be sharing some of my favorite pictures I took on my iPhone from the past 10 days, and what we did, and the stories behind them.  This is going to be a pretty picture heavy post, but I am so excited to share my favorite place with you all!

I took this picture on our flight there!  I absolutely love flying, and you see some of the best views from an airplane!

The giant sail boat in the airport.  Rhode Island is the "Ocean State", and is known for it's water-centered activities.  Sailing is a major one, and sail boats can be seen in the water all around the state!

Not my best picture (lol) but my cousins picked us and our bags up from the airport after we got in.  My family went to get the rental car, but I decided to go straight to the beach house with my cousin.  Well, on the way way started talking about how I had just turned 21, and she wanted to buy me my first legal drink in Rhode Island!  We stopped at a restaurant/bar right on the water and down the road from our beach house called Harborside, where I enjoyed a vodka lemonade, and my cousin got a beer.  We definitely needed to document the moment!

On Monday, we drove up to Plymouth, Massachusetts, for a little day excursion!  We spent the morning at Plimoth Plantation which is one of the coolest places!  You get to walk through a Wampanog and English village set in the 1600s, as if it was the time of the Pilgrims.  After walking through the living museum, we headed to Downtown Plymouth where we spent the afternoon on the water front.  There were a lot of people putting their boats in the water by us, and I just love seeing boats on the water!

There is a long, rocky edge from the boat dock that leads out into the water where people were fishing and walking along, so we decided to do that, too!  The view was absolutely breath-taking, and made for some great picture backgrounds.  So, we forced my brother to take a picture!

My mom wanted to hop in on a photo with us too!  The two women behind us were fishing and a crab latched onto their line and wouldn't let go!  They reeled it in and tried to shake him off, but he just wouldn't let go!  It was too funny.

We stopped for lunch at a place we had been to the last time we visited Plymouth, and just knew that we had to go again!  It has an inside and a rooftop overlooking the water, and we knew we wanted to sit on the rooftop for the gorgeous view.  I got a lobster roll which was absolutely delicious!  When in New England, right?

Another awesome Rhode Island staple: Del's frozen lemonade!  It is seriously the best lemonade, and you know it's real lemon flavor because of the white color.  There are also small pieces of real lemon mixed in, which sounds like it would be gross and sour, but are so good!  We had to get pretzel sticks for dipping because it is the perfect salty/sweet combination!  The lemonade softens the pretzel stick, while the pretzel adds a salty flavor to the lemon.  It's my absolute favorite!

I'm not a huge beer drinker, so for dinner, my cousins took me to a place that had 69 beers on tap so that I could really try some beer!  We got two flights, with so many different flavors!  My favorite was a blueberry beer that I ended up ordering a full glass of afterwards.  We also ordered a coffee-flavored beer which was really strange, but surprisingly good.  If you're visiting the Narragansett area and love beer, go to The Mews!

In the bar of The Mews, people can write whatever they want on a dollar bill and staple it all over the bar.  It was so cool to see, and read all of the different things that people wrote on their dollar bills.  There was even a bra stapled to the ceiling which we thought was hilarious!  I, of course, had to put one of my own up there, so I wrote "Let's Go Blues" (I'm from St. Louis, what can I say?) and our three names, before finding a somewhat empty spot on the ceiling to put it!

Rhode Island also has some of my favorite ice cream!  This is cappuccino chip ice cream in a waffle cone with chocolate jimmies (what they Rhode Islanders call sprinkles!) on top.  My absolute favorite, and what I ordered every time we got ice cream this trip!  This cone is from Brickley's Ice Cream in Narragansett, and I highly recommend!

This is the view from the backyard of our beach house!  There are stairs over to the side that lead straight down into the water for swimming at high tide, or a walk on the beach during low tide.  The yard is a mess in this picture because we had set up an obstacle course for the little cousins to play on!

A full cousins picture!  We went out for sushi at a restaurant in East Greenwich called Kon which was absolutely delicious!  I love sushi, and my dad, cousin, and I split five rolls between us and were so happy with our choices!  After this picture, my dad, two of my cousins, and myself went on a mini bar crawl around the area to celebrate my birthday!  This night was such a blast (and a little bit of a blur...oops!).

My cousin Brenda and me!  Everyone says that we are exactly the same person, and she's probably the cousin I'm closest to.  This is us the night of the bar crawl!  I got a frozen Del's lemonade (delicious) and she got a beer!  We obviously needed a selfie to document the night!

My cousin Jimmy and I at another bar on the water!  He's Brenda's younger brother, and are my mom's first cousins.  Even though they're my second cousins, we treat each other like first cousins and make time to see each other like first cousins!  We decided to do a lemon drop shot, while Brenda watched from behind us (lol).

Brenda's daughter, Andie, and I playing with the filters on Snapchat!  She loved to come up to me and ask if we could make "doggy faces" on my phone!

My dad and Brenda's son, Jack.  He is the cutest kid in the world, and we had such a blast playing with him all week!  My brother and I are also his godparents, which makes seeing him even more special since we don't get to as often as we would like!

We sat outside in the backyard one night and saw this beautiful sunset.  I just had to snap a pic!  This is 100% no filter!

On Friday, we went into my favorite part of Rhode Island: Newport!  Our first stop was somewhere I had been wanting to go since my last visit: the Kiel James Patrick store!  I had to snap a picture of the JFK portrait since I just love him and Jackie.

The outside of this store is just so cute, and overlooks the water.  It's incredibly aesthetically pleasing.

Obviously needed a picture of myself in front of the store!

Not the best picture, I know, but this is the church where JFK and Jackie actually got married!  We drove by it, and my grandpa slowed down so we could snap a quick picture of it.

Our last full day ended up being gray and rainy, so my Brenda and I decided to head out for a little but since we were getting kind of antsy being inside all day.  We went down the street to the coolest waterside bar!  It was 2:30 on a Sunday, but the bar was packed, a band was playing, and people were up dancing.  It was so much fun to sit, people watch, and enjoy a drink!  I got the strawberry lemonade rosé sangria which was delicious!

The same night, Brenda was meeting one of her friends for a drink and invited my mom and I to go along.  Who can say no to that?  We ended up going to the same bar where I had the adult Del's lemonade on our bar crawl.  But this time, my mom and I split a fish bowl.  We've been saying since I turned 21 that we wanted to split one of these, but just never ordered one.  So this time, we just bit the bullet and did it!  The menu said that the serving size was 2-4 people, but the 2 of us didn't even come close to finishing it!  It was so big and so strong!

Our flight on our last day didn't leave until 4:25, so we had the whole morning and early afternoon to spend at the beach house.  My grandpa found this dead horse shoe grab bobbing along in the bay and brought it up for us all to see.  Usually when you see a dead horse shoe crab it's just the shell, but this one still had the body in it which was so weird to see.  They're super gross, but kinda cool to see up close (when it's not alive, at least!).

The picture we took right before heading to the airport.  My brother and I with our godson!  We take this picture every year, and every year Jack just keeps getting cuter!  Leaving him (and everyone else) is always so sad.  My uncle actually requests to come to the airport with us because he likes to make fun of me cry!  We'll be back next year, though, and I am already counting down the days.
