5 Things That Make Me Happy
Lately, I've been feeling kind of down. This is the first summer I've been home from college where I truly feel like an adult. My friends from home are all heading back to school way early, my friends from college are five hours away, and I'm working 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. I've been feeling kind of lonely the past few days and have even been thinking "Am I going to be this boring for the rest of my life?"
The answer is no, I am not going to be this boring for the rest of my life. I'm at a weird in-between stage in my life, and the frustration from it is so frustrating. In honor of this feeling I've been having lately, here is a list of some things that make me happy, in hope that they'll make you happy if you're stuck in a rut, too!
ONE // Reading
I've mentioned this in multiple posts, but I've always loved reading, ever since I was little. Book stores were like heaven to me, and I would have to be dragged out. I would walk up to the check out counter with a pile in my arms, and would have to be told by my parents that I would have to choose. I don't have as much time to read now as I used to, but it's still one of my favorite things to make time for. Weather it's fiction, or nonfiction, I will read anything that sounds interesting to me at the time. Sometimes, I'll even re-read some of my favorite books, (aka...Harry Potter). It puts me in the best mood, and I get lost in the story and the world that is being portrayed in the story.
TWO // Sit Outside
Especially now that it's summer, one of my favorite things to do in the evenings is to have a glass of wine (if you're of age of course), sit in our lounge chairs in the backyard, put on some music, and just hang out with my family. My dad will usually be barbecuing something for dinner, my mom and I will be having some wine and talking, and my brother will be sitting outside on his phone (hey, he's outside which is all that matters!). If it's not too hot, we usually bring our dog outside, too. He loves exploring outside, so we like to bring him outside when we can. Sitting outside with my family is so calming, and just lifts whatever has been troubling me that day off of my chest.
THREE // Self Care
I love doing some sort of self care routine. Some of my favorite things to do are paint my nails, do my nightly skin routine, put on a face mask, or even just get into bed early to watch some YouTube or Netflix. Anything that will make my body feel relaxed, and just overall better at the end of a hard day.
FOUR // Do Something Different
The past few weekends, my family and I have been doing something we haven't done in awhile to get out of the house, and break our daily routine. Father's Day weekend, we all went to see The Incredibles 2 together since we don't see movies together that often. Last weekend we went to Ballpark Village, the pavilion right by Busch Stadium to watch the Cardinals game, have a few drinks, and then go next door to Drunken Fish and get some sushi. This weekend, we're planning on going to a local farmers market and then getting some lunch at a Mexican restaurant we don't get to go to very often. Breaking a routine, or going somewhere different is such a fun experience and is a great way to pull you away from thinking about whatever has you in a funk.
FIVE // Treat Yo Self
Take this idea with a grain of salt. Don't use this every week or something. But honestly, sometimes retail therapy is truly the best therapy. Whenever I have a bad day at school, I love to just get in my car, jam to some music, and head to the mall to look around. I don't even have to buy anything, just being out and doing my own thing is therapy enough. But sometimes buying something I've been wanting is a good feeling, too!
